Het is gelegen aan de rivier de Spree. Vanaf 2017 is de bevolking 39,429. Asteroïde 11580 Bautzen is genoemd ter ere van de stad. Bautzen wordt vaak beschouwd als de onofficiële, maar historische hoofdstad van Oberlausitz, en het is het belangrijkste culturele centrum van de Sorbs, een Slavisch volk.

Leipzig is de meest dichtbevolkte stad in de Duitse deelstaat Saksen.
