Arles (, ook VS:, Frans: [aʁl]; Provençaals: Arle [ˈaʀle] in zowel klassieke als Mistraliaanse normen; Klassiek Latijn: Arelate) is een stad en gemeente in het zuiden van Frankrijk, in het departement Bouches-du-Rhône waarvan het een subprefectuur is, in de voormalige provincie van de Provence. Een groot deel van de Camargue ligt op het grondgebied van de gemeente en is daarmee qua grondgebied de grootste gemeente van Europees Frankrijk (hoewel Maripasoula, Frans Guyana, veel groter is). De stad heeft een lange geschiedenis en was van groot belang in de Romeinse provincie Gallia Narbonensis. De Romeinse en romaanse monumenten van Arles stonden in 1981 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. De Nederlandse post-impressionistische schilder Vincent van Gogh woonde van 1888 tot 1889 in Arles en produceerde in zijn tijd daar meer dan 300 schilderijen en tekeningen.

Lyon of Lyon (VK:, VS:, Frans: [ljɔ̃]; Arpitan: Liyon, uitgesproken als [ʎjɔ̃]; Italiaans: Lione, uitgesproken als [liˈone]) is de op twee na grootste stad en het op één na grootste stedelijke gebied van Frankrijk. Het is gelegen in het oost-centrale deel van het land aan de samenvloeiing van de rivieren Rhône en Saône, ongeveer 470 km (292 mijl) ten zuiden van Parijs, 320 km (199 mijl) ten noorden van Marseille en 56 km (35 mijl) ten noordoosten van Saint -Étienne. Inwoners van de stad heten Lyonnais. Lyon had in 2015513.275 inwoners. Het is de hoofdstad van de metropool Lyon en de regio Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
