Mechelen ], Frans: Mechelen, traditionele Engelse naam: Mechlin) is een stad en gemeente in de provincie Antwerpen in het Vlaamse Gewest van België. De gemeente omvat de stad Mechelen zelf, enkele wijken aan de rand, de gehuchten Nekkerspoel (aangrenzend) en Battel (een paar kilometer verderop), evenals de dorpen Walem, Heffen, Leest, Hombeek en Muizen. De Dijle (Nederlands: Dijle) stroomt door de stad en wordt daarom vaak de Dijlestad genoemd ("Stad aan de Dijle"). Mechelen ligt op de grote stedelijke en industriële as Brussel-Antwerpen, ongeveer 25 km van elke stad. Inwoners vinden werk in de zuidelijke industriële en noordelijke kantoorgebouwen van Mechelen, maar ook in kantoren of industrie nabij de hoofdstad en Zaventem Airport, of in industriële fabrieken nabij de zeehaven van Antwerpen.
