Gela is een stad en gemeente in de autonome regio Sicilië, de grootste qua oppervlakte en bevolking aan de zuidkust van Sicilië. Het maakt deel uit van de provincie Caltanissetta en is de enige gemeente in Italië met een bevolking en oppervlakte die groter is dan die van de provinciehoofdstad. Gela, gesticht door Griekse kolonisten uit Rhodos en Kreta in 689 voor Christus, was de meest invloedrijke polis op Sicilië tussen de 7e en 6e eeuw en de plaats waar Aeschylus woonde en stierf in 456 voor Christus. In 1943 was Gela het eerste Italiaanse strand dat door de geallieerden werd bereikt tijdens de invasie van Sicilië door de geallieerden.

De stad staat bekend om haar geschiedenis, cultuur, architectuur en gastronomie en speelt gedurende een groot deel van haar bestaan een belangrijke rol; het is meer dan 2700 jaar oud. Palermo ligt in het noordwesten van het eiland Sicilië, direct aan de Golf van Palermo in de Tyrreense Zee. De stad werd in 734 voor Christus gesticht door de Feniciërs als Ziz. Palermo werd toen een bezit van Carthago.
