In de middeleeuwen was een pieve (uitgesproken als [ˈpjeːve] of [ˈpjɛːve]) een landelijke kerk met een doopkapel, waar andere kerken zonder doopkapel van afhingen. Het Italiaanse woord pieve stamt af van Latijnse plebs die na de uitbreiding van het christendom in Italië werden toegepast op de gemeenschap van gedoopte mensen.
