Het werd later geregeerd als het hertogdom Lotharingen voordat het Koninkrijk Frankrijk het in 1766 annexeerde. Van 1982 tot januari 2016 was Lotharingen een administratieve regio van Frankrijk. In 2016 werd het onder een reorganisatie onderdeel van de nieuwe regio Grand Est.
