De etymologie bestaat al lang en volgt een oorsprong uit het Latijnse werkwoord placēre, 'behagen'. In het Frans en af en toe in het Engels heet het Plaisance. De naam betekent een "aangename verblijfplaats", of zoals James Boswell een aantal etymologen van zijn tijd schreef om het te vertalen, "knap". Dit was een naam 'van een goed voorteken'.
