Avignon (VK:, VS:, Frans: [aviɲɔ̃]; Provençaals: Avinhon (Klassieke norm) of Avignoun (Mistralian-norm) [aviˈɲun]; Latijn: Avenio) is een gemeente in het zuidoosten van Frankrijk in het departement Vaucluse aan de linkeroever van de Rhône. Van de 90.194 inwoners van de stad (vanaf 2011) wonen er ongeveer 12.000 in het oude stadscentrum, omringd door zijn middeleeuwse wallen. Tussen 1309 en 1377, tijdens het pausdom van Avignon, woonden zeven opeenvolgende pausen in Avignon en in 1348 kocht paus Clemens VI de stad van Joanna I van Napels. De pauselijke controle bleef bestaan tot 1791, toen het tijdens de Franse Revolutie deel werd van Frankrijk. De stad is nu de hoofdstad van het departement Vaucluse en een van de weinige Franse steden die de wallen heeft behouden.

Tours is een stad in het westen van Frankrijk. Het is het administratieve centrum van het departement Indre-et-Loire en de grootste stad in de regio Centre-Val de Loire in Frankrijk (hoewel het niet de hoofdstad is, de op één na grootste stad van de regio, Orléans).
