Varenna is een gemeente aan het Comomeer in de provincie Lecco in de Italiaanse regio Lombardije, ongeveer 60 kilometer (37 mijl) ten noorden van Milaan en ongeveer 20 kilometer (12 mijl) ten noordwesten van Lecco . Varenna werd in 769 gesticht door lokale vissers en werd later gelieerd aan de gemeente Milaan. In 1126 werd het vernietigd door de rivaliserende gemeente Como en ontving later de vluchtelingen van de Isola Comacina, die hetzelfde lot had ondergaan (1169). Varenna grenst aan de volgende gemeenten: Esino Lario, Lierna, Oliveto Lario, Perledo.
