In 2018 woonden 260.897 mensen in de Comune di Venezia, van wie er ongeveer 55.000 in de historische stad Venetië (centro storico) wonen. Samen met Padua en Treviso is de stad opgenomen in het Padua-Treviso-Venetië Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), dat wordt beschouwd als een statistisch grootstedelijk gebied, met een totale bevolking van 2,6 miljoen.De naam is afgeleid van de oude Veneti-bevolking die bewoonde de regio in de 10e eeuw voor Christus.
