Było stolicą trzech kolejnych państw: Księstwa Brunszwik-Wolfenbüttel (1269–1432, 1754–1807 i 1813–1814), Księstwa Brunszwik (1814–1918) i Wolnego Państwa Brunszwik (1918– 1946).
