1. Lombardy

With Milan as its capital, it is no surprise that visitors flock in their millions to Lombardy each year. But beyond the fashion favorite, plenty more must-visit places in the Lombardy region of Italy are crying out to be visited.

There are countless things to do in this region; admiring sunken castles in picturesque lakes, visiting violin workshops in historic cities, being amazed at the art and architecture of Mantua – Lombardy really packs a punch for visitors.

4. Padua

Less than a 30-minute ride on the high-speed train from Venice, Padua is too often disregarded by the majority of visitors. Yet, it makes for a great day trip from Venice, offering a glimpse into the rich history of a city that once was a powerful Commune.

Home to Italy’s second oldest university, founded in 1222, Padua has retained the vivacious atmosphere of a university town, with lively piazzas and arcaded streets, plenty of cafes and bars where the ubiquitous Spritz is de rigueur as the day winds into the evening. Do not miss out!

5. Genoa

For anyone traveling the Milan to Rome with Trenitalia Trains or the other way around route and is looking for a deeply layered, often unvarnished, and boldly authentic travel experience.

We recommend you head to Genoa (which like Venice was once a powerful maritime republic) fronting the Ligurian Sea. Offering more raw and real experience, get an undiluted sense of history, and experience the city’s rich art scene and notable architecture.  One of the top reasons we enjoy it so much is that there is great art and the museums are uncrowded! You can find works by Caravaggio, Van Dyck. Rubens, Durer and Veronese in the Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso and ogle other Old World masterpieces in many landmarks, like the Palazzo Reale and the Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola. There are also fine examples of the Genoese School of art, prominent in the 17th century, in the Palazzo Blanco.
